Castlerigg Stone Circle near Keswick in the Lake District
Having previously enjoyed painting the ancient monument of Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain, when visiting the Lake District I felt somewhat obligated to visit this circle of stones which are thought to be even older at around 3000BC. Viewing them for the first time, with the stones being so much smaller, I must admit, for me they did not appear to be as nearly as dramatic. However, not a wasted journey by any means, the grandeur of the surrounding scenery proved to be more than adequate compensation.
