Black Rock Cottages, Glencoe

A whitewashed cottage or "bothy" showing the snow capped mountains of Glencoe in the background. I guess the name being derived fron the closest mountain being almost black in colour. I must admit I wasn't familiar with the term "bothy", but I found it to be the name used for a very rudimentary cottage without electricity or running water. They were often originally built to provide basic shelter for farm labourers while working in the remote areas of the highlands of Scotland. They are left unlocked for anyone to use - free of charge. Ideal nowadays for the more adventurous traveller with a passion for exploring the Glencoe wilderness!

My inspiration was taken from a painting by Geoff Kelsey
